Why should people living in the modern age study objects and landscapes from the past? What significance do things from ancient times still hold for modern life? Values and concepts are built upon the collective experience of the past; what we think, say and do all embody shadows of yesteryear. To understand the present, it is apt to reflect on the past, as the former cannot exist without the latter. If our minds are sensitive to aesthetics, history and culture, even part of an ancient site, a corner of a traditional painting, or a page of classic text, will remind us that history is an extension of the present reality, offering another dimension and significance for people in the modern world.

Artist Cherie Cheuk extracts artistic nourishment from historical literature and copies ancient paintings to reconstruct various scenes and objects that traverse past and present. Her works use the Gongbi technique to tell modern stories, combining different customs and objects. Designer Jack Lau is adept at the creative use of multimedia digital technology. For this exhibition, he partnered with Cherie Cheuk, as he uses art technology to connect past and present with augmented reality (AR) and motion graphics design to take visitors on a “Visual Journey in Gongbi”.

Traversing past and present opens up possibilities for artistic creation, while technology enriches the connection between art and regions so that precious traditional art can survive the ravages of time. The creative collaboration of artist Cherie Cheuk and designer Jack Lau enables the history-prone mind to traverse past and present and study the history-rich Gongbi brushwork from multiple perspectives.

Artists

Cherie Cheuk was born and raised in Hong Kong. She received a BA (First Class Honours) in 2012 and an MFA from the Fine Arts Department at The Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2017, majoring in Fine Arts and Chinese Gongbi painting, respectively. She excels at depicting the fine details of birds, animals and objects with her contemporary Gongbi technique. Her main focus is nature and culture. With her exquisite Gongbi brushwork, delicate colour scheme, and varied narratives, she expresses the sentiment, imagination and consciousness of a modern urbanite and gives the Gongbi tradition a fresh, new touch.

Cherie had her first solo exhibition, “The Flow of Time”, in Taipei in 2019. She has been featured in several major exhibitions, including “New Ink: An Exhibition of Ink Art by Post 1970 Artists from the Yiqingzhai Collection” in 2013, “A Legacy of Ink: Lui Shou-kwan 40 Years On” in 2015, Ink Asia in 2016 and 2017, “Desiring: Post 97 Hong Kong Ink Art” and Ink Global in 2017, Art Taipei in 2019 and 2021, and Art Basel HK in 2022. In recent years, she has been commissioned by the Hong Kong Museum of Art, the Flagstaff House Museum of Tea Ware and the Art Promotion Office. In 2022, she was awarded the bronze prize in the Liu Kuo-sung Ink Art Award. Her works have been collected by the Hong Kong Museum of Art and private collectors widely in Asia and overseas.

Jack Lau Chun Kit was born in Hong Kong, and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (Multimedia Design) from City University of Hong Kong, which was offered in collaboration with Swinburne University of Technology, in Melbourne, Australia. Over his career, he has accumulated extensive experience in the design field, especially in multimedia design, and has provided a wide range of creative and professional services, including motion graphics, 3D design, interaction design and animation. His works provide the audience with a multidisciplinary visual experience and creative ideas, along with creative application programmes and game designs.

Since 2013, Jack has embarked onto the entrepreneurial journey, establishing Vision Desire Limited, which provides professional digital marketing services for clients using a variety of visual elements, and presents bold, creative strategies and pioneering ideas. He flexibly fuses marketing initiatives and solutions to offer influential and insightful perspectives for the audience. His designs have won the Design Of The Day in DesignAwards.Asia, the Golden Pin Design Award and the Successful Design Awards in 2015, the A’Design Award and Competition in 2017, and the Indigo Design Award in 2019.
