The migration story of the Hakka Luo family began in the Qing Dynasty when they moved from the mountainous region of Xingning in eastern Guangdong Province to Longgang, Shenzhen, seeking better living conditions and land. They built a new house named Hehu. In the early 19th century, the Luo family ventured abroad, shifting from hard labor to business. This journey involved cultural and personal changes, blending different cultures and bloodlines. Throughout hundreds of years of migration, the Hakka people faced the challenge of preserving their identity, eventually developing their own cultural knowledge and discourse to maintain a sense of belonging.
This exhibition, following the theme of folklore and place from ‘Harmony Reimagined - Public Art Exhibition 2023,’ seeks to reframe Hakka stories in a contemporary context. It starts with the Hehu Hakka Residence, the first Hakka inclosure hut spanning two centuries, and explores the inspiration from Hakka culture and migration through the history of the Luo family. Ten artists are invited to respond to themes of ‘having’ and ‘demanding’ amidst changing times, examining history, daily life, community, and nature.
The exhibition is divided into two parts: ‘Where are the Guests From,’ which reflects on migration and cultural exchange, and ‘Tomorrow’s Wonderland,’ which connects Hakka architecture, lifestyle, and survival wisdom with contemporary life. This section imagines modern living through spaces, artifacts, public facilities, and natural elements, probing into the spirituality of modern life. The exhibition aims to explore what ‘sustainable’ and ‘low-carbon living’ mean through observation, concept, and emotion, seeking a more caring and humanistic understanding beyond mere slogans.
